Remembrance at Dusk, Burslem War Memorial
Remembrance at Dusk, Burslem War Memorial
This photograph, taken in the tranquil hours of the evening, features the Burslem War Memorial in Swan Square. This solemn monument, reaching five meters in height and two meters in width, was designed by architect C.G. Cowlishaw and crafted by stonemason W.A.R. Mellor Ltd, with sculptures by C. Wallett. Unveiled on the 11th of November, 1921, by the Earl of Dartmouth, it stands as a dignified tribute to the fallen heroes of World War I and World War II from the Burslem community.
The memorial is prominently marked by inscriptions, including the poignant, "They died that we might live," and "Their name liveth for evermore," etched into its stone. A life-size statue of a World War I soldier, depicted in a moment of reflection, adorns the front face of the square-sectioned cenotaph. The Burslem coat of arms and the wreath festooned with drapes decorate the rear, embodying the town's historic pride and remembrance of its brave sons.
